“Hair botox” is one of the most booked smoothing services in Montreal salons, and one of the most confusing names in the beauty world. There is no needle and no medical Botox involved. This guide explains what the treatment really is, what it can and cannot do, how long it lasts, what Montreal salons charge for it and how to look after your hair afterwards.
What hair botox really is
Hair botox is a conditioning and smoothing treatment done in the salon and sealed with a flat iron. The name is pure marketing: it borrows the idea of “filling in” and smoothing, nothing more. The formulas sold to professionals rely on ingredients such as Brazil nut and macadamia oils, okra and argan, coconut or hydrolysed collagen, depending on the product.
What you can expect: less frizz, softer and shinier hair that is easier to style, and some repair for dry or porous lengths. What you should not expect: hair as straight as after a nanoplasty. Some botox formulas smooth quite a lot and remove volume, others keep volume, and a few do not straighten at all and only focus on repair.
Step by step: what happens in the chair
- Your stylist washes your hair with a clarifying shampoo, or with a sulfate-free restorative shampoo if your hair is fragile.
- The hair is dried until it is almost dry.
- The product goes on the lengths, without touching the roots.
- It stays on for 30 to 45 minutes.
- It is rinsed out, a heat protectant is applied and the hair is dried completely.
- Finally, the stylist seals it with a flat iron, strand by strand. The temperature and the number of passes depend on your hair: lower for damaged or coloured hair, higher for coarse and resistant hair.
It is shorter than a nanoplasty, but still count a good part of an afternoon for long hair.

How long does hair botox last?
Most professional botox products are rated for about 2 to 4 months, with a few gentle formulas up to 5 months. Repeat it when you feel the frizz coming back.
Hair botox, keratin or nanoplasty?
| If you want… | Usually suggested |
|---|---|
| Less frizz and shine, while keeping volume or some curl | Hair botox |
| Smoother, easier hair for longer | Keratin |
| Hair as straight as possible | Nanoplasty (see our guide to nanoplasty in Montreal) |
| Repair for very damaged hair | A reconstruction first, without flat iron |
A good salon decides after looking at your hair: its type, how damaged it is and the result you want. Our treatment quiz can help you prepare that conversation.
Curly hair, blond hair, damaged hair
- Curly hair. Some botox products can reduce frizz while keeping your curl pattern, but the result depends on your hair and on the flat-iron temperature. Say clearly that you want to keep your curls.
- Blond, bleached or grey hair. There are purple versions that neutralize warm tones. At home, a purple shampoo helps too.
- Damaged hair. Moderately damaged hair is a classic case for hair botox. Very damaged hair (breaking, gummy when wet) usually needs a reconstruction first.
What does hair botox cost in Montreal?
Public price lists of Montreal salons in October 2026 put hair botox at roughly $190 to $380 before tax as a starting price, rising with length and density. For example, one salon on Saint-Hubert Street lists $190 for a 150-minute service, another on Décarie Boulevard starts at $225, and a Griffintown salon lists three levels from $273 to $378 and up. Booking platforms show offers from about $135 to $400. A 2022 Quebec media overview already described a range of $125 for short hair to $300 for very long hair.
Ask what the price includes and whether it changes for very long or very thick hair.
Is it safe? Honest answers
- Formaldehyde. Ask which product the salon uses. For the Felps products we know, the manufacturer does not state that they are formaldehyde-free; the room should be well ventilated and the instructions followed.
- Pregnancy, or hair after chemotherapy. We make no safety claim. Talk to your doctor before booking.
- Heat. The flat iron is part of the treatment. A careful stylist adapts the temperature to your hair and tests a strand first.
Aftercare at home
Use a sulfate-free shampoo and a nourishing conditioner or mask. Avoid clarifying and sulfate shampoos at home: they shorten the result of any smoothing treatment. Ask your stylist when you can wash your hair for the first time, because it depends on the product. More tips on our page about maintenance after keratin, botox and nanoplastia.

No. There are no injections and no medical botulinum toxin. “Hair botox” is a trade name for a conditioning and smoothing treatment sealed with a flat iron.
Does hair botox straighten hair?
It smooths and reduces frizz. Some formulas remove more volume than others, but if you want hair as straight as possible, a nanoplasty is usually the better choice.
How long does it last?
About 2 to 4 months for most professional products, sometimes up to 5. It lasts longer with a sulfate-free routine.
Can I keep my curls?
Often yes, with the right product and a moderate flat-iron temperature, but the result depends on your hair. Tell your stylist before the service starts.
How much does it cost in Montreal?
Usually from about $190 to $380 before tax as a starting price in October 2026, depending on the salon, the length and the density of your hair.
